What is Kumiko Art?

"A jewel of Japanese traditional crafts, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage."

Kumiko is a sophisticated technique where thin pieces of wood (as thin as 1mm) are slit and joined into complex geometric patterns entirely without the use of nails or glue. Its origins date back to the Asuka period (6th-7th century), evolving through the centuries as a centerpiece of Japanese architectural beauty.

Traditional Japanese Architecture

Revered as the ultimate luxury item, Kumiko was historically reserved for the sliding doors (Shoji) of grand temples and the residences of the nobility. Today, it remains a symbol of status and refined taste, enriching the hearts of those who behold its intricate shadows and light.

The Artisan's Process

With over 200 different traditional patterns, artisans combine these "geometric vocabularies" to express original worldviews. Our art panels allow you to experience this monumental heritage on a personal scale.

Product Features

Crafted from "Hinoki" (Japanese Cypress) — The Sacred Wood

Since ancient times, Hinoki has been the wood of choice for Japan's most sacred structures, including Horyuji Temple (the world's oldest wooden building). Known for its durability, beautiful grain, and subtle refreshing scent, Hinoki is a wood that breathes and matures alongside your home.

The "Trinity Edition": Three Symbolic Patterns in One

This exclusive panel features a harmony of three legendary Kumiko patterns, each carrying a profound wish from the artisan to the owner:

  • Asanoha (Hemp Leaf): Represents rapid, healthy growth and acts as a talisman to ward off negative energy.
  • Goma (Sesame): Modeled after the nutrient-rich sesame seed, this pattern is a prayer for health and longevity.
  • Rindo (Gentian): When these patterns connect, they form a circle, symbolizing harmonious relationships and enduring bonds.

Infinite Display Possibilities

1. Dramatic Wall Art

The Artisan's Journey: How it's Made

Wood Selection

(1) Wood Selection (Kidori)

Precision begins with the raw wood. Every piece of Hinoki is cut with surgical accuracy to ensure a perfect fit without gaps. This foundational process requires both high-tech machinery and an artisan's intuition to read the wood's grain.

Crafting Kumiko Parts

(2) Crafting the "Leaves"

Each small part (leaf) is shaved at precise angles—60° and 120° for the Asanoha pattern—using a special hand plane (Kanna). There is zero room for error; even a microscopic deviation would prevent the pieces from interlocking.

Assembling the Pattern

(3) Hand Assembly

The geometric patterns are formed by interlocking these leaves. It requires immense patience and a master's touch to feel the tension of the wood as it clicks into place. This rhythmic assembly is the heart of Kumiko craftsmanship.

Adding the Frame

(4) Framing & Translucent Background

A Washi-style acrylic sheet is added as a background to create a soft, diffused glow behind the lattice. Finally, a protective Hinoki frame is hand-fitted to ensure structural integrity and a clean, modern aesthetic.

Finishing Touch

(5) Final Finishing & Coating

To ensure longevity and maintain the wood's pristine appearance, a thin, clear protective coating is applied. This prevents staining while allowing the natural beauty of the Japanese Cypress to shine through.
